Newsweek Cover: ‘The First Gay President’

By Jueseppi B.

The May 21, 2012, issue of Newsweek (used with permission of the publisher).

“‘Let the games begin,” Tina Brown said last week after Time Magazine released its controversial breastfeeding cover.

Brown, whose tenure as editor at Newsweek has seen an array of controversial covers, will respond with the above, pegged to Andrew Sullivan‘s piece on Obama‘s support for same-sex marriage: “The First Gay President.”

Think Newsweek has gone too far? I do.

Mu disgust and dislike for this cover has nothing to do with the article contained within by Mr. Sullivan. I have not read his piece yet, and Mr. Sullivan is an ardent supporter of POTUS Obama so i have no doubt Mr. Sullivan’s article will be “President Positive”.

My anger is over Newsweek going for sensationalism to sell copies to a very small minded population of Americans. You see Newsweek has to keep up with this:

The disrespect continues.

  1. On the surface, this looks hateful. And once again, magazines are just trying to sell with sensationalism. I haven’t read the article yet. However, the article’s author, Andrew Sullivan, is a gay conservative who has written very intelligent and positive opinions of Obama’s presidency. He voted for him in 2008, and will vote for him in 2012. My guess is he will express eager support and truly heartfelt joy over Obama’s courageous position in the article.

    • I have no doubt it will be a great article, I know of Mr. Sullivan, it’s Newsweek that I feel great anger with over the cover. People with attention spans shorter than a redneck cracker’s tiny cock will see this cover and imagine Newsweek has discovered what the tiny minds perceive to be the chink in POTUS Obama’s armour. I still think it is disrespectful. And yes, Newsweek did this only to out sell TIME with it’s stupid cover.

      • I should’ve figured you were on top of this. Sullivan’s been a great supporter. But you’re right, there are right wing organizations taking adavantage of the cover as we write this. I’ve seen a few right wing pieces already just using the cover. And folks do have short attention spans. Although I couldn’t put it as creatively as you did. Hilarious.

      • I ventured onto a few TeaTardedRepubliCANT Pseudo-Freudian Psycho-Sexual Secret-Whore Pro-caucasian Pro-Racist Anti-LGBT Anti-Feminist Reich Wing Party Member sites to read the comments. You’d be once again shocked by the hatred and stupidity in the comments. America is headed into a civil rights war.

      • By the way, if Sullivan is behind the actual title of the article, I imagine he meant it in correlation to when Clinton was affectionately called “the First Black President” by some in the 90s. In other words, Sullivan is saying this was such a brave show of support for the gay community at possible political peril, and so Sullivan is embracing Obama into his community. Having said that, Right Wingers will use the cover to hurt Obama, and Time is trying to sell copies no doubt.

      • I’m not an expert on magazine editor stuff, but I would guess Sullivan would only control his article title and not the magazine cover photo or cover title….but as I say, I am not that up on magazine editing. I can see where the cover title would be complimentary, but the TeaTardedRepubliCANT Pseudo-Freudian Psycho-Sexual Secret-Whore Pro-caucasian Pro-Racist Anti-LGBT Anti-Feminist Reich Wing Party Members will take this and run in a “Presidential Negative” way.

      • For sure. As you said, it’s happening already. But Obama may have thought this all out already. He always seems to outsmart me when I think he’s made a bad move politically.

  2. When I first saw this, I thought it was a photoshop joke put out by some rightwing nut bigot. Then I realized I was wrong. This is completely uncalled for, and just wrong, wrong, wrong. I don’t care who the president is, this is taking it just too far. The title is a complete lie – it’s not even a question as in, “Could Obama be our first gay president?” Hell no. The cover is stating a fact which is completely not true.

I’m sure Obama and his staff expected this and discussed it before Obama made his announcement – but to see this come from “Newsweek”??? Hideous. This is part of the reason I do not follow Main Stream Media that much anymore. CNN is about it – and I’m careful with those folks, too.

All done to sell more copies.

  3. While there are worse things they can call him, they’re just going too damn far. The fact that they use this as an insult says a lot about their own hate, fears, and blatant racism. Keep on digging those ditches, GOP. Just dig enough of ’em, so we can throw your asses in ’em! JB, why you made me go there? I’m supposed to be a lady!🙂

  4. Are you kidding me? This is TOTALLY unacceptable! I’m a 63 year old woman in complete agreement with gay marriage being legalized for everyone as is my husband. We even attended a wedding of two lesbian friends along with a number of my co-workers. My husband and I have been married for 36 years. Does our acceptance of this choice make us “gay”? Newsweek has hit a new low to peddle their dying magazine. It’s disgraceful. I hope they close up shop sooner rather than later for this revolting “headline”.

    • Cindy Sue,….that is why I love you. Happy Mother’s Day and tell that husband of yours he is one blessed man.

  5. They demonstrate their contempt and hate for President Obama continuously, first they attacty him for being black, then his African heritage shown with the tea Party/ Republicans signs and racist emails. They questions his loyalty to this country, and target his ethnicity and African descent saying he is an anti colonialist (as if some how that is bad). They damn him for his education and intelligence as though both education and intelligence is a thing to apologize for. They say he is a socialist as though wanting ALL to do well all people to share in the American dream of a good healthcare, education, and a chance at upward mobility is a bad thing. They say he is a liar in the midst of the house. They FORGET to PROPERLY swear him in as he takes the oath of office, they say he is not a christian and try to tie him to the muslim religion AS IOF EVEN IF HE WERE muslim that would some how being damning. They now question his sexuality as if even if HE WERE gay that would diminish him. They demonstrate their bigotry every step of the way.

They are bigots and racist. Fear full hate mongering and hypocrites.

They hate bl;acks and all else is an ancillary arguement that they cloak their disdain for the POTUS. And News Week is helping to perpetuate this with this cover.

    • I could feel your anger and disgust as I read your words, and I felt this same thing as I first saw this upcoming Newsweek cover, then it hit me square in the brain….no matter what they say or do, they are strengthening his re-election every time they come out with this garbage. I realized yes, they are disrespecting him, and trying to degrade him BUT, what they are really doing is uniting Americans to come out in record numbers and “BARACK” The Vote.

  6. That’s okay. Their hate will continue to strengthen us. White American men in general have no decency. They only get off on hate and control. We will remain enlightened and strong whilst they keep rotting! I’m not even mad at them. President Obama is more man than they could ever be!

    • I’ll be mad at them for you MJB. This is blatant disrespect. Can you imagine Dubbya Bush being on Newsweek’s cover being called a mass murderer for his wars machine?
