Congressional RepublicanPlan B” Legislation: Cuts Taxes for Millionaires, Fails To Meet The Test Of Balance

Today, we released a statement on the Congressional Republican “Plan B” legislation:

The American people have been clear that they will not accept an economic approach that places too big of a burden on the middle class, seniors, students and the most vulnerable Americans while asking too little of the wealthiest Americans.

The Congressional Republican “Plan B” legislation continues large tax cuts for the very wealthiest individuals – on average, millionaires would see a tax break of $50,000 – while eliminating tax cuts that 25 million students and families struggling to make ends meet depend on and ending critical incentives for our nation’s businesses. It would also cut off a vital lifeline of unemployment assistance to 2 million Americans fighting to find a job just a few days after Christmas, while deeply cutting Medicare.

The deficit reduction is minimal, and perversely, given its authors, solely through tax increases with no spending cuts. This approach does not meet the test of balance, and the President would veto the legislation in the unlikely event of its passage.

The President believes this moment presents both sides an opportunity to reach a significant, balanced deal that is good for American families, the economy and for our nation’s future.  He has put forward a proposal that meets the Speaker halfway on both taxes and spending, offering to work with Republicans to cut spending by an additional more than one trillion dollars beyond what he has already signed into law.

The President urges the Republican leadership to work with us to resolve remaining differences and find a reasonable solution to this situation today instead of engaging in political exercises that increase the possibility that taxes go up on every American. The American people are watching closely and deserve no less.

In addition to the statement, the White House released a fact sheet detailing the harmful impacts of the Congressional Republican “Plan B” legislation.

Major Unions Target House Republicans To Keep Social Security Cuts Out Of Fiscal Cliff Deal

House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH)

Three major unions are launching a six-figure ad buy targeting key House Republicans in an effort to keep cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security out of any deal between House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) and President Obama to avert the fiscal cliff.

“Speaker Boehner must listen to the millions of Americans who said loud and clear on November 6 that they voted for protecting and expanding the middle class, not for cuts to vital services that millions of Americans rely on for their healthcare, child care and retirement security,” said Peter Colavito, director of government relations for the Service Employees International Union.

SEIU will join the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) and the National Education Association (NEA) in targeting Reps. Rick Crawford (R-AK), Mike Coffman (R-CO), John Fleming (R-LA), Erik Paulsen (R-MN), and Scott Rigell (R-VA).

The ad comes at an unusual moment in the fiscal cliff debate, when President Obama has agreed in principle to include one up-front cut to Social Security in an emerging deal with Boehner, but Boehner, facing a restive House conference, is weighing an alternative plan that would include only modest tax rate increases on millionaires and no entitlement cuts whatsoever.

What will happen if House Speaker John Boehner gets his way on the budget?

Welcome to Boehnerville, where the rich won’t pay their fair share; our children’s educations will be cut; Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security will be put at risk; and the economic recovery would falter.

Call your member of Congress and tell them to stand up for middle-class families. Because in America, everyone deserves a wonderful life.

A Blast From The Past. President Obama Is Crazy Like A Fox:

The Myth of the Obama Cave-In

“Obama didn’t surrender in 2010. He turned a face-off over the Bush tax cuts into an opportunity to enact a second stimulus that he otherwise could not get past Senate Republicans.”

With the “fiscal cliff” looming, the conventional wisdom is that the president capitulated during the last tax cut fight. Here’s what really happened.

At President Barack Obama’s first press conference after winning reelection, CNN’s Jessica Yellinposed a saucy question: “Mr. President, on the fiscal cliff, two years ago, sir, you said that you wouldn’t extend the Bush-era tax cuts, but at the end of the day, you did. So, respectfully, sir, why should the American people and the Republicans believe that you won’t cave again this time?”

With this pointed query, Yellin was reviving a notion that took root within the mainstream media and progressive circles: Obama surrendered in the lame-duck session of late 2010, when he and the Republicans tussled over continuing George W. Bush’s tax breaks for the well-heeled.

In this view, weeks after the president’s party was trounced in the midterm congressional elections and weeks before the tea partyized GOP’ers were to take control of the House, Obama, who had vowed during the 2008 campaign to kill those tax cuts, acceded to Republican demands for continuing tax relief for those pocketing more than $250,000 a year.

The establishment media reported that Obama had lost the showdown; liberal House Democrats and progressives off Capitol Hill complained Obama had turned his back on his promise and blinked. There was grousing that Obama either had no taste for a political battle or no spine (or both) and that he had sold out a fundamental principle.

But that narrative was wrong when it emerged—and it is not the key to predicting what Obama will do in the present predicament. Obama didn’t wave the white flag in 2010. He turned a face-off over the Bush tax cuts into an opportunity to enact a second stimulus that he otherwise could not get past Senate Republicans. His failure at that time was not that he mustered insufficient mettle; he failed to convey to the world that he had jujitsued the GOP’ers.

  1. Furthermore, I’m laughing that Boehner withdrew the Plan B Bill due to ” lack of support.” No shock there… Worst Speaker of the House ever. I’m toasting with a glass of wine. Cheers.

    • People keep saying POTUS Obama is caving and giving up concessions. People are just stupid. While Barack is a master chess player, these idiots across the aisle and morons all playing UNO.

      • Amen! Now that they’ve been exposed for this constant bafoonery, can you say checkmate, lol. This just keeps getting better and better.

      • It’ll be checkmate once Barack wins every point he needs….including getting all his appointments approved and gets his due respect….which probably won’t occur until sometime around 2018.

      • Even in 2018, the racists won’t give President Obama any credit. I’m tired of the BS. There are so many people who need an ass whoopin right now. Where’s my leather belt.

      • Eventually POTUS Obama will be viewed as the greatest President by even racist haters. His policies will put food on the table and cash in their pockets for years to come. Even racist who won’t publicly give him credit, will secretly thank him.

      • Well said Mr. Jueseppi. I guess I’ve become a little cynical having seen so much attempted revisionist history. However no one can deny what President Obama has achieved amid great obstruction. The GOP talking points are laughable. The game they play is laughable. But no one should be laughing at what the President has truly accomplished. Have a great evening. Tomorrow we live to fight another day.

      • Enjoy the night Ms. Holly….tomorrow we remember the Sandy Hook 28, and celebrate life by stopping Americans from ending life for the sake of having a false sense of bravado over gun ownership. Sleep well and dream sweetly. 😉

Let’s fight for our democracy people! Vote against those who clearly don’t care about the majority of the American people.
