South Carolina’s battle over Medicaid expansion

Published on Feb 3, 2014

After the Supreme Court ruled that states were not obligated to expand their Medicaid programs under the Affordable Care Act, South Carolina was one of the first to opt out. PBS NewsHour’s Mary Jo Brooks reports on the effects for residents who are still uninsured, plus a small alternative program designed to reach some of them..

President Obama on Raising the Minimum Wage

Published on Feb 4, 2014

During a virtual road trip on Google+, President Obama answers a question from Darnell Summers, a fry cook at a fast-food restaurant in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, about raising the minimum wage.

Statement by the President

I applaud this morning’s news that CVS Caremark has decided to stop selling cigarettes and other tobacco products in its stores, and begin a national campaign to help millions of Americans quit smoking instead.  As one of the largest retailers and pharmacies in America, CVS Caremark sets a powerful example, and today’s decision will help advance my Administration’s efforts to reduce tobacco-related deaths, cancer, and heart disease, as well as bring down health care costs – ultimately saving lives and protecting untold numbers of families from pain and heartbreak for years to come.  I congratulate – and thank – the CEO of CVS Caremark, Larry Merlo, the board of directors, and all who helped make a choice that will have a profoundly positive impact on the health of our country.

Statement by the President

Today, in a strong bipartisan vote, the U.S. Senate came together to pass a comprehensive Farm Bill – legislation that will build on the historic economic gains in rural America over the past five years, create new jobs and opportunities, and protect the most vulnerable Americans.  This bill provides certainty to America’s farmers and ranchers, and contains a variety of commonsense reforms that my Administration has consistently called for, including reforming and eliminating direct farm subsidies and providing assistance for farmers when they need it most.  It will continue reducing our deficits without gutting the vital assistance programs millions of hardworking Americans count on to help put food on the table for their families.  And it will support conservation of valuable lands, spur the development of renewable energy, and incentivize healthier nutrition for all Americans.   As with any compromise, the Farm Bill isn’t perfect – but on the whole, it will make a positive difference not only for the rural economies that grow America’s food, but for our nation.

Embattled Gov. Christie hits the road: Chicago Feb. 11; stops in Texas, D.C.

WASHINGTON–Embattled New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie hits the road, with fundraisers and a speech in Chicago on Feb. 11 for the Republican Governor’s Association with stops in Texas, here and other outposts in the coming weeks.

Christie is intent on keeping a high profile while the George Washington Bridge probe continues. Christie, the RGA chair, is responsible for raising millions of dollars; it’s too early to say yet if the unfolding bridge scandal handcuffs Christie’s ability to raise campaign cash.

On Feb. 6 Christie headlines funders in Dallas and Fort Worth.

On Feb. 11 Christie delivers a speech to The Economic Club of Chicago which the RGA says is going to be open press and is being billed as a “conversation luncheon.” Following the speech, Christie has a series of RGA fundraising events followed by an RGA dinner.

As I reported earlier, Christie is in Washington Feb. 21-24 for the National Governors Association annual winter meeting, where the RGA–as is the Democratic Governors Association–will be holding fundraising events.

On March 6, Christie talks to the Conservative Political Action Conference–known as CPAC–at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center outside Washington.
