Another Telecommunication Rule Under Attack

Not only is our Internet privacy lost, but there is another telecommunication rule presently under attack.

The new FCC Chairman, Ajit Pai (former Verizon lawyer), thinks Net Neutrality was a mistake. Pai plans to overturn the current rule that prohibits ISPs from controlling access to a speedy internet, thereby allowing ISPs to profit from exclusive “fast lanes” they would be able to create.

This is worrisome to website owners who would lose visitors if Internet access to their site slowed down. (Perhaps you are one of them?)

In addition, large corporations like Comcast, Verizon, Time Warner Cable, and AT&T would be able to slow traffic lanes to alternative news websites that are not owned and sponsored (and censored) by large media corporations. The big guys gotta stick together.

However, little guys can stick together, too. And there are more of us little guys (and gals).

Join the Fight to Secure Net Neutrality

Little guys who stand together, can accomplish big things. Along with Fight for the Future, many companies, organizations, and individuals have joined the Battle for the Net.

If you haven’t already, join the fight to secure the future of a free-flowing Internet. Write to the FCC and Congress in order to tell them to protect Net Neutrality and to oppose Ajit Pai’s plan. You may submit the comment provided by Battle for the Net, or submit one that you create.

The Internet belongs among the public commons. We must protect what is ours. Bill Davidow, author of Overconnected: the Promise and Threat of the Internet, explains:

“Free markets are the most efficient and best mechanism for managing most economic activity. But when they operate in arenas in which they can exploit the commons, the logic of the free market dictates that they will destroy it.”

Tax-Payer Funding Developed the Internet

The Internet belongs to everyone because American tax-payers enabled the development of the Internet. According to Internet pioneer Vint Cerf:

“The Internet did start with the ARPANET project and the federal government directly funded the creation of the Internet we know today.”

Typical of federally funded public research, whether it’s technological or medical, it’s freely available so that private enterprise may continue research and development. In this way, our government gives a jump-start to much of the innovation that eventually springs from the private sector. (See? A benevolent big government isn’t so bad, after all.)

But. When the temptations of corporate profiteering lead to the exploitation of personal information, and lead to online inequality with exclusive fast lanes here and lots of slow lanes everywhere else… It’s time to resist. That is not the kind of innovative outcome Americans expect from the good government work they support with their tax dollars.

Fight for Your Future

Too many folks despise political corruption, yet think they’re helpless to do anything about it. Their shoulders slump as they tonelessly drone, “You can’t take on City Hall.”

Then things got worse.

One good thing about the Trump presidency, though, is it’s unwitting cultivation of an American appetite for political protest and resistance. And for free advertising…

Are you a blogger, self-publishing author, or website owner? Take action before your online pursuits are cut off at the knees. Do you rely on the many quality independent, corporate-free news networks only available on the Web? Protect your access to those websites, and protect them.

Open-minded Independents and Progressives are known for their polite temperance during political discourse. They’ll often change the subject before risking a friendship. Their opinions are more humble. Because they tend to gather a complex mental mass of ideas, knowledge and information, they understand that nobody knows it all.

But now is the time to firmly voice your concerns. Be like a Fight for the Future billboard. On whatever real estate or platform you have, on land or online, freely advertise who the two-faced congressional lawmakers are — who seek public office but secretly bow to wealthy private interests.

The 2018 mid-term elections will be here before they know what happened.
