The remote UK island of South Georgia is one of the world’s last great wilderness areas and is home to 98% of the world’s Antarctic fur seals and half the world’s elephant seals, as well as many endemic bird species. However, millions of rats, introduced two centuries ago by sailors and whalers, have devastated the island’s seabirds, causing their populations to drop by more than 90%.
